PoliGrip Lawsuit:

Lawsuits continue to be filed against GlaxoSmithKline, manufacturer of PoliGrip, on behalf of people who used PoliGrip products, including Super Poligrip, to secure their dentures and then tested positive for zinc poisoning.  The PoliGrip lawsuits allege that the use of PoliGrip caused zinc poisoning, resulting in paralysis, pain, loss of sensation, tingling in the hands and feet, muscle weakness, poor balance, myelopathy and other neurological problems.

A recent PoliGrip lawsuit involved a two men who had been diagnosed with neurological problems including myelopathy and neuropathy.  Their lawsuit against GlaxoSmithKline, manufacturer of Super PoliGrip, alleged the following:

  • That the Super PoliGrip they used to secure their dentures had dangerously high levels of zinc, which led to hyperzincemia (zinc poisoning) and hypocupremia (low copper)
  • GlaxoSmithKline failed to warn about the risk of zinc poisoning from PoliGrip
  • GlaxoSmithKline failed to inform the claimants that PoliGrip contains zinc
  • GlaxoSmithKline failed to inform the claimants of the correct dosage and use of PoliGrip (people with poor fitting dentures tend to use more denture cream).

Poligrip Lawsuit: Research Supports Claims that
PoliGrip Caused Zinc Poisoning

A recent study conducted by the Department of Neurology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center found zinc concentrations ranging from about 17,000 to 34,000 mug/g in Fixodent and PoliGrip denture creams, levels high enough to cause zinc poisoning (hyperzincemia), which can result in copper deficiency (hypocupremia) and profound neurologic disease.1

In the same study, three patients with zinc poisoning who used Fixodent or PoliGrip stopped using the denture cream.  As a result, their serum zinc levels improved.  Copper supplementation resulted in mild neurologic improvement in two patients who stopped using denture cream.

The researchers concluded that use of denture creams like PoliGrip that contain zinc may result in zinc poisoning and resulting hypocupremia and serious neurologic disease.
