Zinc Poisoning (Hyperzincemia)

A recent study conducted by the Department of Neurology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center found zinc concentrations ranging from about 17,000 to 34,000 mug/g in certain denture creams, levels high enough to cause zinc poisoning (hyperzincemia), which can result in copper deficiency (hypocupremia) and profound neurologic disease.¹

In the same study, three patients with zinc poisoning who used the denture creams stopped using the denture cream. As a result, their serum zinc levels improved. Copper supplementation resulted in mild neurologic improvement in two patients who stopped using denture cream.

The researchers concluded that use of denture creams that contain zinc may result in zinc poisoning and resulting hypocupremia and serious neurologic disease.
