Welcome to Pritzker | Ruohonen
Kaletra Overdose
An accidental overdose of Kaletra, resulted in the death of a 44-day-old infant born with HIV. The infant was given approximately 6.5 mL of Kaletra Oral Solution (10 times the intended dose). The infant died nine days later of cardiogenic shock.
Kaletra (lopinavir/ritonavir) is used in combination with other anti-HIV medicines to treat people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Kaletra is a combination of two medicines, lopinavir and ritonavir. Kaletra, a type of medicine called an HIV protease (PRO-tee-ase) inhibitor, is for adults and for children age 6 months and older. (The infant in this case was under 6 months of age.)
There may be evidence that the person administering the Kaletra to the infant misread the bottle label and did not understand that Kaletra Oral Solution is highly concentrated, containing 80 mg of lopinavir and 20 mg of ritonavir per mL--not per bottle.
