In July of 2008, FDA notifying the makers of fluoroquinolone antibiotics that they need to add a “boxed warning” to their prescribing information about the increased risk of developing tendinitis and tendon rupture in patients taking fluoroquinolones.

Reports of tendinitis and tendon rupture after use of fluoroquinolones started in the early 1980s. By 1996, the FDA issued a Report of Adverse Events alerting health professionals of the association between tendinitis/tendon rupture and fluoroquinolones. At the same time, FDA revised the class labeling for fluoroquinolones to include a warning of possible tendinitis/tendon rupture. This is a less serious warning than the "boxed warning" discussed above.
