What is Acanthamoeba keratitis?

Acanthamoeba keratitis means an inflammation of the eye (keratitis) caused by Acanthamoeba, ameba (microscopic organisms) that are common in the environment and have been found in air, soil, and water.  The water sources of Acanthamoeba include lakes, rivers, tap water, pools, and hot tubs.

Most of the time, exposure to Acanthamoeba will not cause illness, but contact lens wearers are at risk for Acanthamoeba keratitis when their contact lens solution does not kill it.  AMO recalled Complete MoisturePlus when reports of Acanthamoeba keratitis were associated with use of Complete MoisturePlus.  Read more about the Complete MoisturePlus recall

What are the symptoms of Acanthamoeba keratitis?
The following information on Acanthamoeba keratitis symptoms is from the CDC:

Early in the infection, the symptoms of Acanthamoeba keratitis can be very similar to the symptoms of other more common eye infections. The symptoms, which can last several weeks to months, are not the same for everybody and might include:
  • Eye pain
  • Eye redness
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Sensation of something in the eye
  • Excessive tearing
Patients should consult with their eye doctor if they have any of the above symptoms. Acanthamoeba keratitis will eventually cause severe pain and possible vision loss or blindness if untreated.

If you suspect you have Acanthamoeba keratitis, please consult with your eye doctor.  If you have been diagnosed with Acanthamoeba and you used AMO Complete MoisturePlus at any time in the past, please contact Pritzker | Olsen, P.A. for assistance.
