What is Bacillus Cereus Poisoning?
Bacillus cereus poisoning is two types of illness:
- Diarrheal Bacillus cereus is caused by a large molecular weight protein. The symptoms of diarrheal Bacillus cereus include watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and pain, generally occurring 6-15 hours after exposure to the bacterium. Nausea may accompany diarrhea, but vomiting rarely occurs. Symptoms persist for 24 hours in most instances.
- Vomiting (emetic) Bacillus cereus is believed to be caused by a low molecular weight, heat-stable peptide. Emetic Bacillus cereus is characterized by nausea and vomiting within 0.5 to 6 hours after exposure to the bacterium. Occasionally, abdominal cramps and/or diarrhea may also occur. Duration of symptoms is generally less than 24 hours.
Outbreaks of Bacillus cereus are generally associated with food, but may be caused by contaminated medical products. Bacillus cereus can cause death, most notably to infants, or serious illness, including the following:
- Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) – NEC is the death of intestinal tissue. Severe cases of NEC cause significant intestinal necrosis, perforation of the intestine, septic shock and death. In some cases, including cases we are handling, the baby can go from having mild NEC symptoms to death within a day. The baby died after consuming milk thickened with Simply Thick.
- Sepsis – Bacillus cereus sepsis happens when the bacteria infects the blood. It can be fatal.
- Gangrene – Gangrene is the death of tissue due to lack of blood supply. Severe gangrene may require amputation.
- Meningitis – Meningitis is an infection of the lining of the brain. It can cause death or permanent injury.
- Cellulitis – Cellulitis is a common skin infection that, when severe, can lead to infections of other parts of the body, including the blood, bone, lymph vessles, heart, brain etc.
- Panophthalmitis – Panophthalmitis is an infection of the eye. When Bacillus cereus is the cause of panophthalmitis, the infection progresses very quickly, and the result is often loss of the eye. Surgical removal of an eye is called enucleation.
- Lung abscesses – Lung abscesses, cavities in the lung, are caused when an infection kills lung tissue. This death of lung tissue is also referred to as necrosis of pulmonary tissue.
- Endocarditis – If Bacillus cereus infects the blood, bacteria can be carried to the heart and infect the inner layer of the heart, the endocardium. Endocarditis can destroy hear valves. It can also lead to stroke, heart failure and death.
Bacillus Cereus Found in Simply Thick Products
During an inspection of a Thermo Pac LLC plant in Georgia that was making Simply Thick thickening products, the FDA found Bacillus cereus in some of the product. The inspection took place in May and June of 2011 and led to a recall of certain lots of Simply Thick thickening gel manufactured at the Stone Mountain, Georgia plant. For a list of recalled products, please see our Simply Thick recall information.
The inspection was prompted by several reports of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in premature infants. Many of these infants and their parents are our clients. Contact attorneys Eric Hageman and David Szerlag for a free consultation regarding a Simply Thick lawsuit.
Triad Alcohol Swabs Bacillus Cereus Contamination
On January 5, 2011, Triad Group, of Hartland, Wisconsin, recalled ALCOHOL PREP PADS, ALCOHOL SWABS, and ALCOHOL SWABSTICKS manufactured by Triad Group due to the risk of contamination with Bacillus cereus.
