2007 ADVERSE HEALTH EVENTS ANNUAL REPORT
MINNESOTA MEDICAL MALPRACTICE

Between October 7, 2006, and October 6, 2007, a total of 125 adverse health events were reported to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). This figure represents an average of 10.4 events per month or roughly 2.4 events per week.

The most frequent adverse health events noted in this year’s report Surgeonswere stage three or four pressure ulcers (43), wrong site surgery (24), and a foreign object left in a patient after surgery (25). Other events included wrong procedures (10), medication errors (4), falls (4), criminal events (4), and other (10).

The report noted that 19 percent of the adverse events resulted in either death (13) or serious disability (10). Of the 13 deaths reported during this time period, four were due to falls, three were the result of suicide, and four were related to the malfunction of a product or device.

In an article in the medical journal Neurosurgery that reported on a study of 1108 elective neurosurgical procedures, a neurosurgeon recorded 2684 errors in 87.1% of the cases. 22.6% of the errors were considered major. 78.5% of the errors were deemed preventable.
