URGENT UPDATE TO THIS PUFFED RICE RECALL AND PUFFED WHEAT RECALL: 13 STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENTS HAVE REPORTED 21 CASES OF SALMONELLA AGONA LINKED TO THE CEREAL, WHICH WAS RECALLED BY MALT-O-MEAL COMPANY.

Puffed Rice RecallMalt-O-Meal has announced a Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat recall due to possible Salmonella contamination.  The Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat recall involves unsweetened Puffed Rice and unsweetened Puffed Wheat Cereals produced with “Best If Used By” codes between April 8, 2008 (coded as “APR0808”) and March 18, 2009 (coded as “MAR1809”).

The recalled Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat was distributed nationally, marketed under the Malt-O-Meal brand and as some private label brands including Acme, America's Choice, Food Club, Giant, Hannaford, Jewel, Laura Lynn, Pathmark, Shaw’s, ShopRite, Tops and Weis Quality.  Since this Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat recall involves so many brands of unsweetened Puffed Rice or unsweetened Puffed Wheat cereals, please check your cupboards to see if you have any of the recalled cereal.

The Puffed Wheat and Puffed Rice recall was initiated after the company’s internal routine food safety testing detected the presence of Salmonella in a product produced on March 24, 2008.  According to Malt-OMeal, the company immediately commenced an investigation to determine the root cause of this one positive finding as well as the extent of any possible exposure, and initial results from this follow-up investigation indicated that additional Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat cereals may have been exposed to Salmonella.

As a result of this internal investigation, Malt-O-Meal has chosen “out of an abundance of caution to protect consumers” to voluntarily remove all unsweetened Puffed Rice and unsweetened Puffed Wheat products with “Best If Used By” codes between April 8, 2008 (coded as “APR0808”) and March 18, 2009 (coded as “MAR1809”).
According to Malt-O-Meal, the company’s investigation into the source of the Salmonella has determined a root cause of this situation and corrective measures have been taken to ensure that there is no re-occurrence of this issue.

On the Malt-O-Meal website, the company states, “If anyone believes they have experienced an illness or any other adverse effect from consuming any of our products, we hope they will contact us so we can work with them on a case-by-case basis.”  As attorneys with extensive experience with Salmonella claims, we would suggest that anyone who believes they have been sickened by the recalled Puffed Rice or Puffed Wheat contact our office for a free consultation with a Salmonella lawyer.  To contact an attorney at our office, please call 1-888-377-8900 (toll-free), e-mail attorney Fred Pritzker, or submit the firm’s free case consultation form.
