Jalapeno Pepper Recall
Salmonella Saintpaul Outbreak

1251 Salmonella Saintpaul cases have been confirmed in 43 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. Read the about the Salmonella Saintpaul outbreak investigation.

Jalapeno PepperThe FDA has announced that one jalapeno pepper sample is a positive genetic match with the Salmonella Saintpaul strain causing the current Salmonella outbreak that has over 1200 confirmed cases in 43 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. According to the FDA, "the positive sample was obtained during an FDA inspection at a produce distribution center in McAllen, Texas. The pepper was grown on a farm in Mexico, however, that does not mean that the pepper was contaminated in Mexico."

As a result of this positive genetic match, Agricola Zaragoza, Inc. of McAllen, Texas recalled jalapeno peppers distributed since June 30th, 2008.  The jalapeno peppers were distributed to customers in GA and TX. The FDA does not know which, if any, of the more than 1,200 illnesses reported to date are related to the recalled jalapeno peppers or to the grower who supplied this product.

The jalapeno peppers being recalled were shipped in 35lb. plastic crates and in 50lb. bags with no brand name or label.
Distribution of these products has been suspended while FDA, the Texas Department of State Health Services and the company continue their investigation as to the source of the problem.

According to the CDC:

The contaminated peppers may still be in grocery stores, homes, and restaurants. Until more is known about the likely location of contamination, FDA is advising all persons to avoid consuming raw jalapeño peppers and dishes containing those raw peppers. Consumers should be aware that raw jalapeño peppers are often used in the preparation of fresh salsa, pico de gallo, guacamole, and other dishes. Cooked or pickled peppers from jars and cans are not part of this warning.

Persons with increased risk of severe infection, including infants, elderly persons, and those with impaired immune systems, should also not consume raw serrano peppers. Other persons who want to reduce their risk of Salmonella infection can take similar precautions.
