Fatal Salmonella Typhimurium Infection
Idaho Wrongful Death

Peanut ButterOver 450 people in 43 states have been infected with the same strain of Salmonella Typhimurium. At least 11 people in Idaho have been sickened, including one person who died.

According to the Idaho Department of Health, Salmonella may have been a contributing factor in the death of an eastern Idaho man who was over the age of 65. The man had eaten peanut butter, but the IDH declined to give any more information about the man or where he may have eaten the peanut butter.

“Our hearts go out to the family of the man who died,” says Dr. Randall Nett, epidemiologist. “Although most people recover without treatment, severe infections may require hospitalizations and lead to complications, especially for infants, elderly people and those with impaired immune systems. We are continuing to work with the CDC and other states to trace the source of the infection. In the mean time, anyone who thinks they may have become ill from eating peanut butter is advised to consult a health care provider.”

State and federal health officials have genetically linked King Nut Peanut Butter with this outbreak. King Nut Peanut Butter was manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America, a supplier of peanut butter and peanut paste to numerous companies throughout the United States.

There have been a number of recalls associated with this Salmonella outbreak:
