Quong Hop Tofu Recall

Update to Quong Hop Tofu recall information below:  Further testing found Listeria monocytogenes in certain Quong Hop tofu products.  In response to the test results, Quong Hop has expanded the tofu recall as follows:
  • Soy Deli 12oz Vacuum Pack Nigari White Tofu UPC 35302-00216 (dates through 1/28/2008)
  • 30 oz Vacuum Pack White Tofu UPC 35302-00217(dates through 11/28/2007)
  • Bulk tofu 10 and 25lb cases (dates through 11/28/2007)
According to a press release, Quong Hop & Co. of South San Francisco, California, has recalled some tofu products because they might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.  “The recall includes all packages of Soy Deli tofu coded Dec. 17, 2007. It also includes three products coded Sept. 23, 2007: the 30-ounce Soy Deli nigari tofu, the 12-ounce Soy Deli water pack tofu and the 16-ounce Quong Hop water pack tofu.”

The recalled “SOY DELI” and “QUONG HOP” brand products are distributed in the Midwest and West coast throughout supermarkets and natural food stores.

Quong Hop recalled the Quong Hop and Soy Deli tofu after a routine test by Washington State Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety Program revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in a 12 ounce vacuum-pack package of “SOY DELI FIRM ORGANIC NIGARI TOFU”. The company is voluntarily recalling all products produced during the same time period as the sampled product "to ensure customer safety."

Listeria contamination is a matter of inadequate sanitation measures.  To keep a food processing plant free of Listeria, floors, grates, air ducts, equipment and tools need to be thoroughly and frequently cleaned.  In some circumstances, equipment needs to be replaced.

If a Listeria infection (listeriosis) can be traced to a food manufacturer, the food manufacturer may be held liable for the resulting damages, including the following: past, present, and future medical expenses; past, present, and future pain and suffering; past, present, and future loss of income; and other damages.  We have seen heartbreaking situations where people's lives have been ended or severely affected by Listeria infections.
