Below is the Massachusetts Department of Public Health news release regarding the Roche Brothers and Sudbury Farms Roller Sandwich recall:
BOSTON (August 6, 2008) — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) has been informed about a recall of several types of ready-to-eat “roller sandwiches” manufactured by a Wilmington Massachusetts Company, DBC, Inc. (doing business as World Class Canapés, Inc.).
The products in question may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
These sandwiches were sold by eighteen Roche Brothers and Sudbury Farms stores in eastern Massachusetts and may have been offered in the prepared food section or used on party platters. None of this product was sold out of state. (Please see sample photo as an example of what the product looks like.)
The affected product was produced on July 30, 2008 under the following names: “Progressive Gourmet Buffalo Chicken Roller Sandwich”, “Progressive Gourmet Chicken Caesar Roller Sandwich”, or, “Progressive Gourmet Honey Turkey with Baby Spinach Roller Sandwich”. Consumers may have purchased the ready to eat products at retail establishments between July 31, 2008 and August 2, 2008.
Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and freezers and discard the product if found. Based on the shelf life marked on the product, it is unlikely that the product remains in retail establishments. The product may have been repackaged by retail stores, or provided as part of a catering service, there may be no labeling referring to “World Class Canapés” or the “Progressive Gourmet” label.
Listeriosis does not cause illness in most healthy people. However, it can be life-threatening for some individuals, including those with weakened immune systems, the elderly and newborns. It can also cause miscarriages in pregnant women.
Symptoms of listeriosis include fever associated with muscle aches, fatigue, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms such as cramping or diarrhea. The illness may be mild in some people and symptoms are sometimes described as flu-like.
If you ate any of these products, and are experiencing any of these symptoms, please contact your health care provider.
The DPH Food Protection Program will be working to determine the source of the contamination at the facility where the sandwiches were produced. The problem with the product was originally identified through microbiological sampling by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. (Read about Listeria / listeriosis wrongful death.) Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause miscarriages and stillbirths, and can also cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly, and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy. (Read about Listeria / listeriosis miscarriage.) Infection can spread to the nervous system, resulting in high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea, confusion and convulsions.
