New York State Consumer Warning: Listeria in Neparovana Smoked Sausage
New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker today warned consumers not to eat “Neparovana Smoked Sausage” sold at Muncan Food Corp, 676 Seneca Avenue, Ridgewood, Queens 11385 due to possible Listeria contamination.
The “Neparovana Smoked Sausage” was sold bulk from the store’s deli display cooler. It is not coded. Muncan Food Corp is voluntarily recalling the product.
Routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis of the product by Food Laboratory personnel revealed the product was contaminated with Listeria. Production of the product has been suspended while the company investigates the source of the problem.
Listeria is a common organism found in nature. It can cause serious complications for pregnant women, such as stillbirth. Other problems, inculding Listeria meningitis, can manifest in people with compromised immune systems. Listeria can also cause serious flu-like symptoms in healthy individuals.
No illnesses have been reported to date to this Department in connection with this problem. Consumers who have purchased “Neparovana Smoked Sausage” should return it to the place of purchase or discard it [*IF NO ONE HAS EATEN ANY OF THE SAUSAGE. If someone has eaten some of the sausage, DO NOT RETURN THE SAUSAGE OR THROW IT AWAY; instead, wrap it securely, write "Do not eat - 1-888-377-8900" and the date on the wrapping, and store it in the refrigerator for 70 days from the day the last person ate some of the sausage. The incubation period for a Listeria infection (listeriosis) can be up to 70 days. If someone who ate the Neparovana sausage is diagnosed with listeriosis, please contact Pritzker | Ruohonen toll-free at 1-888-377-8900 or submit the firm's online consultation form.]
*Pritzker | Ruohonen has made the above addition to the New York State news release to prevent the destruction of valuable evidence. If you have Neparovana Smoked Sausage, do not eat it or put it somewhere where it may be eaten by someone who is unaware of this warning.
