Massachusetts E. coli Outbreak Linked to Coleman Brand Ground Beef Sold at Whole Foods Market

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has announced that there are seven (7) E. coli cases in Massachusetts linked to Coleman ground beef sold at Whole Markets Food stores during the month of July.

According to the USDA-FSIS, the Massachusetts E. coli cases are part of a multi-state outbreak linked to Nebraska Beef, Ltd., a supplier of ground beef components. The states involved in this outbreak include California, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

In response to this outbreak, Nebraska Beef, Ltd. recalled another 1.2 million pounds of beef products on August 8, 2008. Read about the Nebraska Beef and Coleman Recall.

To prevent further illness, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is advising consumers not to eat any fresh ground beef product purchased at Whole Foods Market between June 2nd and August 6th. This includes ground beef and ground beef patties from the meat counter as well as from the prepackaged meat cooler. Any remaining product should be thrown out. Consumers are also advised to check their freezers for ground beef products they may have purchased last month and frozen.
