What is the connection between E. coli and hemolytic uremic syndrome?

Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is the leading cause of acute kidney failure in children and typically results as a complication of an E. coli infection. In this case, the type of E. coli is 0111.

HUS generally occurs around the eighth day after an E. coli infection and presents as diarrhea, usually bloody diarrhea.  The mortality rate for HUS, which primarily affects children under 10, is between 3-7%. Among the elderly, HUS has a dire prognosis, with mortality rates up to 50%.

Because HUS can cause life-long illness and patients may need future surgeries and other medical care, compensation for HUS patients needs to include amounts for future medical expenses and future pain and suffering. Contact attorney Fred Pritzker for more information.

Who is compensated if someone dies in an E. coli outbreak?

When an E. coli outbreak tragically ends in death, the family can Scales of Justiceseek compensation from liable parties.  We recently had an E. coli wrongful death settlement, and we are currently handling another E. coli wrongful death case, one involving a restaurant where a goat was slaughtered in the restaurant kitchen for ceremonial purposes.

Wrongful death cases, which are governed by wrongful death statutes, generally allow compensation for medical expenses, loss of income, loss of care and comfort and other damages.  Any compensation recovered is shared by the next of kin.
