Cleveland, Ohio E. coli Outbreak Update
An investigation of E. coli infections associated with consumption of ground beef has involved two Cleveland-area restaurants, Deekers Side Tracks in Mentor (1 illness) and the North Olmsted VFW (2 illnesses and possibly one death, 7-year-old Cleveland girl), according to health officials. The three E. coli outbreak survivors are a 3-year-old girl, a 24-year-old man and a 71-year-old man.
The exposures happened in early April 2009. It was not until May 17 that the 7-year-old Cleveland girl died. She fought for her life for weeks.
The outbreak, which also involves illnesses in Illinois and Pennsylvania, led to a May 21 recall of over 95,000 pounds of ground beef by Valley Meats LLC of Coal Valley, Illinois.
The recalled ground beef was sold to restaurants in 11 states. Some of the recalled ground beef was sold under the brand names 3S, Grillmaster, J&B, Klub, Thick 'N Savory, and Ultimate. Some was sold with no specific brand name.
