MICHIGAN E. Confirmed E. coli Cases in Michigan Linked to
Kroger Ground Beef and Additional Cases in Ohio
According to the CDC, 45 confirmed E. coli O157:H7 cases have been linked both epidemiologically and by molecular fingerprinting to Kroger ground beef: Michigan (20--22 according to the Michigan Department of Community Health), Ohio (21), Georgia (1--more will be added when testing is complete), Kentucky (1), Indiana (1) and New York (1). These cases have also been associated with Nebraska Beef, Ltd., the supplier of ground beef components to Kroger.
Onset of illness in these patients occurred from 5/30/08 to 6/11/08. At least one patient has developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS).
Michigan E. coli: Link to Kroger Ground Beef
Health investigators tested ground beef from victims' homes that was purchased at Kroger® retail stores in Michigan and Ohio. Molecular fingerprinting testing on E. coli O157 isolates isolated from ground beef samples have confirmed the isolates to be the outbreak strain of E. coli O157, meaning Kroger ground beef has been linked to the outbreak.
Health investigators also found a significant association between illness among case patients and eating ground beef purchased at one of several Kroger® Co. stores in Michigan and Ohio.
In response to this E. coli outbreak, Kroger has recalled an "undetermined amount" of ground beef sold at the following stores: Kroger, Fred Meyer, QFC, Fry's, Ralphs, Smith's, Baker's, King Soopers, City Market, Hilander, Owens, Pay Less, Scotts, and Dillons. Read more about the Kroger recall.
Michigan E. coli: Association with Nebraska Beef, Ltd
In response to this outbreak, Nebraska Beef, Ltd. recalled over 5 million pounds of ground beef products.
Epidemiological investigations and a case control study conducted by the Michigan and Ohio Departments of Agriculture and Health and the CDC determined that there is an association between Nebraska Beef, Ltd. ground beef products and 45 illnesses reported in Michigan (20--22 according to the Michigan Department of Community Health), Ohio (21), Kentucky (1), Indiana (1), New York (1) and Georgia (1--more will be included when testing is done). The illnesses were linked through the epidemiological investigation and by their PFGE pattern, or DNA fingerprint, found in PulseNet, a database maintained by the CDC.
The USDA-FSIS has concluded that the production practices employed by Nebraska Beef, Ltd. are insufficient to effectively control E. coli O157:H7 in their beef products that are intended for grinding. This means that the products subject to this recall may have been produced under insanitary conditions.
