Country Cottge Lawsuit: Updates Regarding the Oklahoma E. coli Outbreak Associated with the Country Cottage Restaurant
The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) has issued a number of updates regarding the the E. coli outbreak linked to the Country Cottage in Locust Grove, Oklahoma, that has sickened people in Bixby, Pryor, Sand Springs, Locust Grove, Broken Arrow, Peggs, Tulsa and McAlester.
According to the OSDH updates, the department has narrowed the focus of its investigation into the E. coli outbreak to the Country Cottage restaurant in Locust Grove, OK.
This outbreak involves E. coli 0111, a particularly virulent type of E. coli.
“This is a rare type of E. coli that is not normally found in an outbreak this large,” said State Epidemiologist Dr. Kristy Bradley.
Although news reports indicated that the source of the outbreak was the restaurant's well water, the OSDH reported on September 2, 2008 that the well water is not the source of the outbreak.
“The well water is not the source of this outbreak,” said State Epidemiologist Dr. Kristy Bradley. “We are continuing our efforts to conduct microbiological testing of food preparation and serving surfaces in the restaurant, and we continue to interview cases, as we try to establish an association with those who became ill and a potential source.”
At least 314 persons have been sickened as a result of the outbreak including 246 adults, 65 children (the ages of 3 of the cases have not been determined). At least 72 persons have been hospitalized including 17 who have received dialysis treatment. Of that number, nine were children and seven were adults. As stated above, one 26-year-old man, a gospel singer and newlywed, has died.
