E. coli and Barbecue Pit in Moultrie, Georgia

E. coli BacteriaAccording to the Southwest Georgia Public Health District, there are now eight confirmed E. coli cases, 4 presumed cases and 12 results-pending cases. 4 patients have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a severe illness that is often associated with E. coli infections. It can be harder to diagnose E. coli in HUS patients.

The Southwest Georgia Public Health District investigation has linked the Barbecue Pit in Moultrie, Georgia (Colquitt County) to this E. coli outbreak. Health Director Dr. Jacqueline Grant has stated that if the fourth patient who has developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) ate food prepared by the Barbecue Pit before falling ill, " then all the
presumed cases of E. coli as well as all the confirmed cases will have been linked to the restaurant.”

Restaurant Liability

Restaurants are strictly liable for illnesses and death caused by the food they prepare.  We have had several cases where a restaurant was held liable even though a specific food item served at the restaurant was not pinpointed as the source of the outbreak.
