Salmonella Typhi Outbreak and Typhoid Fever Lawsuit
On August 12, 2010, the Southern Nevada Health District confirmed 4 cases of Salmonella Typhi, the bacterium that causes Typhoid Fever, in Nevada and reported that 5 cases have been confirmed in California. Evidence uncovered in the investigation points to the source of the illnesses being a frozen fruit product known as mamey fruit pulp distributed by Goya Foods, Inc. of Secaucus, New Jersey.
Mamey fruit pulp, sometimes called zapote or sapote, is a tropical fruit grown in Central and South America and is commonly found in markets nationwide, particularly in Hispanic communities. The product is often used in shakes and smoothies.
In response to this outbreak, on August 12, 2010, Goya Foods issued a recall of 14 ounce packages of Frozen Mamey Pulp, due to a potential health risk from Salmonella Typhi. Read more about the Goya mamey pulp recall.
If you were sickened with Salmonella Typhi after consuming Goya mamey pulp in a shake or smoothie, contact our law firm about a Goya Foods lawsuit and your right to sue the company for the following:
- Medical expenses
- Pain and suffering (includes emotional distress)
- Loss of income
- Loss of potential earnings
- Punitive damages upon clear and convincing evidence that the acts of the defendant show deliberate disregard for the rights or safety of others
- Other damages
Typhoid Fever Treatment
Once Salmonella Typhi bacteria are eaten or drunk, they multiply and spread into the bloodstream. The body reacts with fever and other signs and symptoms.
Antibiotics are used to treat typhoid fever. Persons given antibiotics usually begin to feel better within 2 to 3 days, even so, many require hospitalization. Persons who do not get treatment may continue to have fever for weeks or months, and as many as 20% may die from complications of the infection.
