Jimmy John's Salmonella Outbreak Update:
Illinois and Missouri Hit Hardest

Illinois Jimmy John's Salmonella: 59 people in Illinois have culture-confirmed cases of the outbreak strain of Salmonella serotype I 4,[5],12:i:-. Many people who have become ill since Nov. 1, 2010 with Salmonella, reported eating alfalfa sprouts at Jimmy John's restaurants in 14 Illinois counties - Adams, Bureau, Champaign, Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kankakee, Lake, Macon, McHenry, McLean, Peoria, Will and Winnebago.

Missouri Jimmy John's Salmonella: 22 people in Missouri have culture-confirmed cases of the outbreak strain of Salmonella serotype I 4,[5],12:i:-. Cases have occurred from one side of the state to the other in Franklin, St. Charles, Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Louis Counties, and in Kansas City. Many of these people also report eating alfalfa sprouts.

National Numbers:  112 people nationwide have culture-confirmed cases of the outbreak strain of Salmonella serotype I 4,[5],12:i:-.The number of ill persons identified in each state and the District of Columbia with the outbreak strain is as follows: California (1), Colorado (1), Connecticut (1), District of Columbia (1), Georgia (1), Hawaii (1), Iowa (1), Illinois (59), Indiana (10), Kentucky (1), Massachusetts (2), Missouri (22), New York (1), Pennsylvania (3), South Dakota (1), Tennessee (1), Texas (1), Virginia (1), and Wisconsin (3).

Jimmy John's Alfalfa Sprouts Outbreak Investigation

Local, state and federal health officials have linked this outbreak to consumption of Tiny Greens Alfalfa Sprouts and Spicy Sprouts (which contain alfalfa sprouts mixed with radish and clover sprouts). The sprouts were distributed to various customers, including farmers’ markets, restaurants and groceries in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Missouri, and may also have been distributed to other Midwestern states. In response to this outbreak, there was an alfalfa sprouts recall.
