Goya Mamey Pulp Recall Prompted by
Salmonella Typhi Outbreak

Health officials in Nevada and California have confirmed nine cases of Salmonella Typhi, the bacterium that causes typhoid fever. Of those sickened, 5 have been hospitalized.

Health officials have linked the Salmonella Typhi outbreak with mamey pulp distributed by Goya Foods, Inc., a New Jersey company. Prompted by this outbreak, on August 12, 2010, Goya Foods recalled 14 ounce packages of Frozen Mamey Pulp, due to a potential health risk from Salmonella Typhi and typhoid food poisoning. The recalled Goya Mamey Pulp was distributed in the states of Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah, and Washington through retail stores.

The recalled Goya mamey pulp comes in a 14 ounce plastic package and is not marked with a lot number or expiration date. The UPC is 041331090803. Mamey fruit pulp, sometimes called zapote or sapote, is a tropical fruit grown in Central and South America and is commonly found in markets nationwide, particularly in Hispanic communities. The product is often used in shakes and smoothies.

If you have any recalled Goya mamey pulp, you should do one of the following:

  • If someone has been diagnosed with Salmonella Typhi after eating Goya mamey pulp, you should contact our law firm about a Goya Foods lawsuit immediately. Leftover Goya mamey pulp may be evidence that the Salmonella infection (salmonellosis and possibly typhoid fever) was caused by the product.
  • If someone has consumed the Goya mamey pulp within the last 5 days, wait another 3 days to make sure that person does not contract a Salmonella Typhi infection.
  • If at least 8 days have past since someone ate the Goya mamey pulp, discard the pulp and contact Goya Foods, Inc.’s Consumer Affairs for a refund.
