Goya Mamey Pulp Lawsuit: Typhoid Fever Risk and Evidence of Salmonella Typhi Contamination
Health officials have confirmed nine cases of Salmonella Typhi, the bacterium that causes Typhoid Fever. To date, there are four confirmed cases in Nevada and five confirmed cases in California.
Both epidemiological and microbiologica evidence points to mamey pulp distributed by Goya Foods, Inc. of Secaucus, New Jersey, as one of the sources of the typhoid fever outbreak. The epidemiological evidence consists of patient interviews that revealed a connection between the illness and consumption of Goya mamey pulp in shakes or smoothies. The microbiological evidence consists of the following:
- Tests that determined that the outbreak victims were sickened by the same strain of Salmonella
- A positive test for Salmonella Typhi in a sample of Goya Foods, Inc. mamey pulp
The situation is under investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), working in conjunction with public health authorities from the two affected states.
Mamey fruit pulp, sometimes called zapote or sapote, is a tropical fruit grown in Central and South America and is commonly found in markets nationwide, particularly in Hispanic communities. The product is often used in shakes and smoothies.
On August 12, 2010, Goya Foods recalled 14 ounce packages of Frozen Mamey Pulp, due to a potential health risk from Salmonella Typhi and typhoid food poisoning. The recalled Goya Mamey Pulp was distributed in the states of Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah, and Washington through retail stores. Again, 4 people have contracted typhoid fever in Nevada and 5 in California.
