Cantaloupe Salmonella Outbreak Information

CDC is collaborating with public health officials in a number of states, including Oregon, Washington, California, and Maryland and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Panama infections. Investigators are using DNA analysis of Salmonella bacteria obtained through diagnostic testing to identify cases of illness that may be part of this outbreak.

As of March 29, 2011, 13 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Panama have been reported from Oregon (5 cases), Washington (4 cases), California (2 cases), Colorado (1 case) and Maryland (1 case).

There have been more than 10 other salmonella outbreaks linked to the consumption of cantaloupe since 1989. The most recent are:

  • April 2000: Salmonella Poona infected people who ate whole or pre-cut cantaloupe imported from Mexico.
  • April 2001: Another outbreak of Salmonella Poona linked to whole or pre-cut cantaloupe imported from Mexico.
  • March 2002: A third outbreak of Salmonella Poona linked to whole or pre-cut cantaloupe imported from Mexico.
  • December 2007: An outbreak of Salmonella Litchfield was linked to the consumption of cantaloupe.
  • January 2008: Cantaloupes grown in Honduras was linked to an outbreak of Salmonella Litchfield.
  • November 2008: There was a confirmed outbreak of Salmonella Javiana linked to the consumption of cantaloupe.

The entire process of growing, harvesting, packing and shipping cantaloupe is suspect in Salmonella outbreaks.

  • Many cantaloupe farms are in Mexico and Central America where there are fewer regulations.
  • Animal feces and human waste may contaminate the soil and water supply.
  • The textured surface of the melon facilitates the retention of bacteria that will not easily be destroyed by a routine chlorine rinse.
  • Although there are shipping and storage regulations for cut, processed cantaloup, there are no current regulations for whole, unprocessed cantaloupes.
