A total of 129 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Heidelberg have been reported from in 34 states with illness onset dates between February 27 and September 13, 2011.
The outbreak strain of Salmonella Heidelberg is resistant to several commonly prescribed antibiotics. Among the ill persons with available information, 22 (37%) have been hospitalized and 1 Salmonella wrongful death has been reported, a woman from Sacramento County, California. As a result of the epidemiologic and traceback investigations, as well as in-plant findings, FSIS determined that there is a link between the Cargill ground turkey products and this illness outbreak.
