The Memphis and Shelby County Health Department has issued a press release regarding this outbreak:
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (July 29, 2009) – In conjunction with the Tennessee Department of Health, the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department is conducting an active and thorough investigation at A & R Barbecue located at 3721 Hickory Hill.
This investigation – which is both epidemiological and environmental in nature – is in response to receiving some complaints alleging food borne illnesses stemming from food consumption on July 10 and July 11, 2009. The investigation was launched on July 14, 2009 and the Department has been working diligently and will continue to be vigilant while working to determine the source of complaints. At this point, it appears that the illnesses occurred from patrons who reportedly ate food prepared on those dates and there is no indication of ongoing transmission. The Health Department has not identified a source of the illnesses at this point and no new cases have been reported to the Health Department by patrons who consumed food outside those two dates.
The restaurant voluntarily closed on July 25 and remains closed at this time. The owner of the restaurant has been extremely cooperative in this investigation to ensure that all of their food preparation processes protect the safety of their patrons.
While there has been speculation of a specific source of food borne illness, this has not been confirmed. Therefore, it would be premature to reach a confirmed conclusion at this time. The Health Department’s actions are consistent with the guidelines of public health policy and state law.
