Salmonella Outbreak Information
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines a foodborne-disease outbreak as "an incident in which two or more persons experience a similar illness resulting from the ingestion of a common food." Federal and state laws require public and health officials to report incidences of foodborne illness. This effort has uncovered numerous foodborne-disease outbreaks, including Salmonella outbreaks, over the last several years.
Recent Salmonella Outbreaks
Amarillo, Texas IHOP Salmonella Outbreak
According to the Amarillo Department of Public Health, at least 10 people have contracted Salmonella infections after eating at the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) in Amarillo, Texas.
CDC Salmonella Saintpaul Investigation
CDC is collaborating with public health officials in several states, the Indian Health Service, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate an ongoing multistate outbreak of human Salmonella serotype Saintpaul infections. Read about the CDC Salmonella Saintpaul Investigation.
FDA Warning Regarding Tomatoes
The Food and Drug Administration is alerting consumers in New Mexico and Texas that a salmonellosis outbreak appears to be linked to consumption of certain types of raw red tomatoes and products containing raw red tomatoes. Read the FDA Warning.
Texas Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Tomatoes
Texas health officials have confirmed 21 cases in Texas since mid-April, including cases in Harris, Fort Bend, Dallas, Tarrant, Hays and Cameron counties. [Update: 265 confirmed Salmonella Saintpaul cases in Texas.] Consumption of raw tomatoes has been implicated as the likely source of infections. New Mexico Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Tomatoes
The New Mexico Department of Health has announced that an outbreak of Salmonella is likely caused by eating uncooked tomatoes. So far, 31 people from seven counties in New Mexico have been sick with a strain of Salmonella called Salmonella Saintpaul. [Update: 73 confirmed Salmonella Saintpaul cases in New Mexico.] Several

Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat Recall
21 people in 13 states have laboratory-confirmed cases of Salmonella linked to a Malt-O-Meal Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat recall due to possible Salmonella contamination. The Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat recall involves unsweetened Puffed Rice and unsweetened Puffed Wheat Cereals produced with “Best If Used By” codes between April 8, 2008 (coded as “APR0808”) and March 18, 2009 (coded as “MAR1809”). Minnesota Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Frozen Chicken
Minnesota health and agriculture officials have two recent cases of salmonellosis (specifically Salmonella Enteritidis infection) in Minnesota have been linked to raw, frozen, breaded and pre-browned, stuffed chicken entrees. The implicated product is Milford Valley Farms Chicken Cordon Bleu with a stamped code of C8021. This product is sold at many different grocery store chains. Salmonella: Agropecuaria Montelibano Cantaloupe
March 22, 2008 - The FDA has issued an import alert regarding entry of cantaloupe from Agropecuaria Montelibano, a Honduran grower and packer, because, based on current information, fruit from this company appears to be associated with a Salmonella Litchfield outbreak in the United States and Canada. Salmonella: Flying Tortilla Restaurant
According to New Mexico health officials, 4 people have been sickened in a Salmonella outbreak associated with the Flying Tortilla, a Santa Fe, New Mexico restaurant. Salmonella Outbreak and Tuna Recall
Cases of Salmonella in Hawaii have prompted Choyce Products of Honolulu, Hawaii to recall 5,452 pounds of frozen Yellowfin Tuna. The FDA and the state of Hawaii are conducting a joint investigation of a variety of vendors due to the state receiving Salmonella illness reports between October 1, 2007 and December 31, 2007. Safeway Ground Beef Salmonella Outbreak
We are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Newport infections associated with Safeway ground beef. At least 38 people have been sickened in Arizona, California, Utah and Nevada. In response to this outbreak USDA-FSIS has issued a public health warning in lieu of having Safeway initiate a voluntary Safeway ground beef recall. Read about a Safeway ground beef lawsuit.
Taste of Chcago Salmonella Outbreak
Pritzker | Ruohonen is monitoring a Salmonella outbreak that has been linked to the Pars Cove Persian Cuisine booth at the Taste of Chicago. According to health officials, 126 people have reported being sickened after eating at the Pars Cove booth. Salmonella poisoning is the likely cause. Samonella Outbreak Linked to Veggie Booty Snack Food
The law firm of Pritzker | Ruohonen is investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Wandsworth infections linked to Veggie Booty snack food, which was recalled on June 28, 2007. Salmonella Recall and Outbreak: Peter Pan Peanut Butter and Great Value Peanut Butter
February 14, 2007 - The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to eat certain jars of Peter Pan peanut butter or Great Value peanut butter due to risk of contamination with Salmonella Tennessee (a bacterium that causes foodborne illness). Salmonella Newport Outbreak Linked to Tomatoes
November 28, 2006 – Health officials are investigating a second Salmonella outbreak linked to tomatoes. This Salmonella outbreak has sickened nearly 100 people in 19 states. According to health officials, it began in June and ended October 20, 2006. The strain of Salmonella involved in this outbreak was Salmonella Newport. Salmonella Typhimurium Outbreak Linked to Tomatoes
November 3, 2006 – State and federal health investigators have linked the recent Salmonella typhimurium outbreak to tomatoes served in restaurants. To date, 21 states have reported 183 cases of illnesses to the CDC. Learn more about the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak linked to tomatoes.
Minnesota Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Tomatoes
November 3, 2006 – Minnesota has at least 14 cases of Salmonella poisoning (salmonellosis) that have been linked to tomatoes served in restaurants. 5 of the Minnesota cases are most likely linked to the same fast food restaurant. Read more about the Minnesota Salmonella outbreak linked to tomatoes.
Detroit Food Poisoning: Roostertail Banquet Facility
Michigan health officials are investigating a food poisoning outbreak in Detroit that sickened at least 30 people who ate at Detroit’s Roostertail banquet facility. Investigators are looking at the food served at the banquet to determine if this outbreak is part of the nationwide Salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 172 people in 19 states. Salmonella Outbreak: Tomatoes
The CDC has identified an outbreak of Salmonella infections and suspects the source is fresh produce, possibly tomatoes. The Salmonella outbreak has sickened at least 172 people. Of those, 11 have been hospitalized. Read more about the Salmonella outbreak that may be associated with tomatoes.
Salmonella Outbreak: Margaritas in Canton, Connecticut
State and local health officials are investigating a possible outbreak of Salmonella associated with Margaritas, a Canton, Connecticut, restaurant. Ten people who ate at Margaritas between Sept. 21-27 have tested positive for Salmonella poisoning, called salmonellosis. All ten people were infected by the same strain of Salmonella bacteria. Minnesota Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Frozen Chicken Entrees
Health officials have linked two recent Minnesota salmonellosis outbreaks to frozen, single-serving, chicken entrees. These products have been sold under various labels and are characterized as pre-browned, microwavable, and stuffed or filled. One Minnesota outbreak has sickened 26 people; the other, 3 people. At least 34 people from other states have also fallen ill. Salmonella Outbreak at Café Barbette
At least 40 people who ate at Café Barbette located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, have been sickened by the Salmonella bacteria, a foodborne pathogen that causes severe flu-like symptoms. Infection with Salmonella bacteria can lead to severe dehydration. Health officials have not confirmed a source of the outbreak. Food Source Found for Corky & Lenny's Salmonella Outbreak
(Updated information) The February 2006 Salmonella outbreak in Lansing, Michigan, has been linked to a liver sandwich served at an area restaurant Corky & Lenny's. The oil used to roll matzo balls and moisten the liver before serving also tested positive for Salmonella. Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Sushi King Restaurant
February 24, 2006–A Salmonella outbreak in Bentonville, Arkansas, is linked to the Sushi King Restaurant. At least 89 people have become ill after eating at the Sushi King during the first two weeks of February. Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Corky and Lenny's
February 23, 2006–According to Cuyahoga County health officials, there have been 71 reports of people becoming ill after eating at Corky & Lenny's, a Woodmere, Ohio, restaurant. 23 cases of Salmonella have been confirmed, and 20 people have been hospitalized.
