Salmonella Newport Outbreak Linked to Tomatoes
November 28, 2006 – Health officials are investigating a second Salmonella outbreak linked to tomatoes. This Salmonella outbreak sickened nearly 100 people in 19 states. According to health officials, it began in June and ended October 20, 2006. The strain of Salmonella involved in this outbreak was SalmonellaNewport. The other Salmonella outbreak has sickened at least 183 people in 21 states and involved Salmonella typhimurium.
Salmonella causes severe vomiting and may lead to dehydration. The elderly and people with compromised immune systems may develop life-threatening complications, including Reiter’s syndrome. Each year, an estimated 600 people die from Salmonella poisoning, referred to as salmonellosis.
