ROCEPHIN WARNING
Rocephin (ceftriaxone sodium) has been linked to the deaths of newborn infants.  The babies most at risk are premature infants who are hyperbilirubinemic (a condition associated with jaundice).  As a result, Roche, the manufacturer of Rocephin, issued a letter to healthcare professionals warning of the potential risk and advising them of Roche’s update to the Rocephin for injection prescribing information.

The new prescribing information specifically states that hyperbilirubinemic neonates (newborns) should not be treated with Rocephin.  In addition, the new information states that calcium-containing solutions should not be administered in conjunction with Rocephin because the infant deaths involved calcium-ceftriaxone precipates in the lungs and kidneys.  Calcium-containing solutions should not be used with Rocephin in any way, including the following:

  1. For reconstitution of the Rocephin prior to administration of Rocephin by injection
  2. With the Rocephin using different infusion lines
  3. At around the same time as Rocephin

Research indicates that ceftriaxone (found in Rocephin) can displace bilirubin from its binding to serum albumin and bilirubin encephalopathy can possibly develop in these patients. Bilirubin encephalopathy can cause brain damage or death

If your child has died or suffered injury to the lungs, kidneys, or brain after administration of Rocephin, please contact the law firm of Pritzker | Olsen, P.A. for a free consultation by calling toll-free at 1-888-377-8900 or submitting the firm’s online consultation form.  A case based on the administration of Rocephin may involve both product liability and medical malpractice issues.  If your baby has kidney problems, lung damage, or brain damage, it may be due to the administration of Rocephin or another medication.  It could also be due to other malpractice-related birth injuries.
