FDA Warning Regarding Raw Milk Sold at Piney Ridge Farm in New Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
June 14, 2007 -- Consumers who have purchased raw milk from Piney Ridge Farm in New Bethlehem any time after May 21 should discard it immediately due to the risk of Listeria monocytogenes contamination, Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff said today. [Note from Pritzker | Ruohohen: If someone has consumed contaminated raw milk, you should preserve the milk and watch for symptoms of Listeria. To preserve raw milk, put it in a safe container, write "Do not drink - 1-888-377-8900" on the container, and keep it in the refrigerator for 70 days. The incubation period for Listeria is from 3 to 70 days. If no one is sickened, throw the milk out. If someone contracts a Listeria infection, including Listeria meningitis, call 1-888-377-8900 for a free consultation with an attorney at Pritzker | Olsen, P.A..]
Raw milk is milk that has not been pasteurized or homogenized.
"During routine inspection of the dairy, a preliminary test showed the presence of Listeria bacteria in some raw milk samples," said Wolff. "If consumers have raw milk from this farm, they should discard it immediately." [See above note from Pritzker | Ruohohen.]
There have been no illnesses reported as a result of the potential contamination but if people who consumed the raw milk become ill, they should consult their physicians.
The Department of Agriculture has suspended sales of raw milk at the dairy and is ensuring that corrective action is taken. Samples were taken from the farm during routine testing on June 11 and tested positive for Listeria on June 14.
Multiple laboratory samples must test negative before sales can resume.
Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches and, sometimes, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance or convulsions can occur.
Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, but infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth.
Symptoms of Listeriosis can appear in four days to three weeks. [Note from Pritzker | Olsen, P.A.: The incubation period is from 3 to 70 days.]
