Listeriosis Symptoms

In pregnant women, listeriosis may cause flu-like symptoms with the sudden onset of fever, chills, muscle aches, and sometimes diarrhea or upset stomach. The severity of the listeriosis symptoms during pregnancy may vary. Usually, the symptoms are so mild that the woman does not realize there is a problem until she has a miscarriage or she notices that the baby is no longer moving. Although there is usually little risk to the mother, if the infection spreads to the nervous system, the symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and/or convulsions.
