Propane Leak Suspected in Fatal Rico, CO House Explosion

A propane leak is the suspected source of a fatal home explosion in Rico, CO. One woman, 42-year-old Lisa Salliby, was killed in the explosion, which occurred at 4:30 p.m. on January 23. Two other people who live at the residence on Piedmont St. were not at home.

Fire officials suspect a propane leak was the source of the explosion which blew the house apart, throwing Ms. Salliby 30 feet from the house and hurling its doors 100 yards away. Dolores County fire chief Mike Zion told local media that the body of the victim was located after a three-hour search.

Rico is located in the southwestern part of Colorado where there has been heavy snow recently. Heavy snow on propane tanks can pose a risk of fire and explosion, but there can be other causes of a propane leaks.
