Salmonella Outbreak in WA Associated with Costco Chicken Salad

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert on October 9, 2016 about a Salmonella outbreak that may be associated with a chicken salad sold at the Costco Store #1190 in Lynwood, Washington. Four people are sick with the outbreak strain of Salmonella I 4,[5],12:i:-.

The CDC is investigating the outbreak along with the USDA and the Washington State Department of Health. Those agencies have determined that there is a “possible link” between rotisserie chicken salad from Costco’s Alderwood store in Lynwood and those illnesses. the four case patients got sick from September 2 to September 6, 2016. Traceback investigations found that three of the four patients ate rotisserie chicken salad bought at that store on August 26, August 31, and September 2, 2016.

No product has tested positive for the outbreak strain of Salmonella. The product that is the subject of the health alert is varying weights of “Costco Rotisserie Chicken Salad” that was sold directly to consumers. It was produced August 26 through September 2, 2016. If you purchased this product, discard it or take it back to the store for a refund. FSIS is working with Costco and other public heath officials on this investigation.

The symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning can include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea that may be bloody, fever, chills, headache, and muscle pains. People usually get sick six hours to three days after they consume food contaminated with this bacteria. While most people recover on their own within about a week, some people, especially those with high fever, dehydration, or blood in the stool should see a doctor.
