Salmonella Found at Facility Linked to Hawaii Limu Poke Outbreak

The Hawaii State Department of Health Sanitation Branch has ordered Marine Agrifuture LLC (also known as Olakai Hawaii) to immediately cease and desist selling or distributing their products because Salmonella bacteria was found at the facility. A Salmonella outbreak in that state is linked to the consumption of ogo, or seaweed. Officials traced the product back to the Marine Agrifuture facility on Oahu. They found the pathogenic bacteria at that farm.

Hawaii officials conducted environmental and sample testing on November 2 and 7, 2016. The bacteria was found in the packing and processing tanks and in the farm environment.

The Salmonella outbreak linked to these products sickened 14 people in Hawaii. They were sickened in mid to late October after eating Limu Poke, which is raw fish with seaweed. Four of those sickened were hospitalized because their illnesses were so serious.

Peter Oshiro, chief of the DOH Sanitation Branch said in a statement, “distributors and retailers have been notified to remove the affected products from sale or distribution immediately. We advise the public to discard any suspect product they may have.” The Marine Agrifuture products that can no longer be sold include Kahuku Ogo, Robusta Ogo, and Sea Asparagus.

That facility’s products may have been shipped to all of Hawaii’s islands and to the states of California and Washington on the mainland. The Hawaii Department of Health is confirming all locations that may have received the product.
