Listeria bacteria can contaminate spinach in the field or in the processing plant. If there are illnesses (none yet, but still possible), traceback investigations will need to be done to determine exactly where the contamination happened.

This bacteria is nasty and can cause a severe illness called invasive listeriosis. It is invasive because it quickly and easily moves from the intestinal cells to the blood and then to the brain, heart, kidneys and pancreas. Most elderly people who get listeriosis develop meningitis, an brain infection that is often fatal and can cause permanent brain damage. The unborn and newborn babies are at risk of infection if their mother eats contaminated food while pregnant. This can lead to miscarriage, still birth, premature birth and severe illness of a newborn.
