Stryker Hip Implant Lawsuit for Metal Poisoning (Cobalt and Chromium)

This cobalt and chromium poisoning (metallosis) information was updated to address the September 2016 recall of the Stryker LFIT™ Anatomic CoCr V40™ Femoral Heads hip implant products. Patients who had this product and a Stryker Accolade stem implanted for hip replacement may experience premature failure of the hip replacement.

Chromium and Cobalt Poisoning

Chromium and cobalt ions can cause damaging tissue reactions:

  • fibrinoid necrosis (pseudo-tumors)
  • lymphocytic (lymph cell) infiltration and aggregation
  • vasculitis (inflammation causing thickening and scarring of the walls of the blood vessels).

Release of these metal ions can also cause hip implant loosening and fractures, particularly in the modular neck.

For patients who have revision surgery, this metal poisoning can cause problems, including disengagement or failure to disengage mating surfaces during revision surgery. This means that otherwise well fixed hip implant parts may need to be replaced. In addition, revision surgery can lead to infection and sepsis (bacteria in the blood) that can be fatal.
