North Dakota Lead Poisoning: Makoti Ingots
Lead ingots distributed at the Makoti Threshing Show on October 7 and 8, 2006, have been recalled. The ingots are 70% lead, which is enough lead to make a young child seriously ill. In March of this year, a 4-year-old Minneapolis boy died after swallowing a lead-laden Reebok charm. Although no one has been injured by the Makoti ingots, Pritzker | Olsen, P.A., a premier product liability law firm, is reprinting the North Dakota Department of Health announcement of the Makoti ingot recall as a public service. If you have one of the ingots, please handle it as little as possible and dispose of it as directed below.
North Dakota Department of Health October 16, 2006, Recall Announcement: Lead Poisoning Hazard Prompts Recall of Makoti Threshing Show Ingot
BISMARCK, N.D. – The North Dakota Department of Health today announced a voluntary recall of the 2006 Makoti commemorative lead ingot. The ingot, with the word “MAKOTI” in raised relief letters, was distributed as a souvenir of the Makoti Threshing Show Oct. 7 and 8, 2006. The ingot, which is about 1.5 inches wide by 6 inches long, is 70 percent lead.
No incidents or injuries associated with the ingot have been reported; however, the ingot should be removed from the environment of young children immediately. Lead and lead dust are toxic and, if ingested by young children, can cause adverse health effects, including severe and often permanent mental, emotional and physical injuries. The ingots should be handled as little as possible until they can be disposed of properly in a collection box at the Plaza-Makoti C-Store located at 33800 Highway 23. The box will remain at the C-Store until Nov. 25, 2006.
People with questions about lead poisoning are urged to contact their local public health unit or physician, or call Sandi Washek, North Dakota Department of Health, at 701.328.5188. Additional information on lead poisoning is also available at
