New York E. coli Cases
NEW YORK E. COLI: Lawyers at Pritzker | Ruohonen are currently representing victims of E. coli outbreaks linked to ground beef. Health officials have identified 7 cases of E. coli in Suffolk County, New York, that may be associated with undercooked ground beef. All of the ill individuals in Suffolk reported consuming ground beef products during the period of June 9th through July 3rd, mostly at neighborhood barbecues.
Although all of the individuals purchased ground beef products locally, health officials stressed that there has been no specific brand of ground beef identified, and no common location where the ground beef was purchased. Preliminary findings suggest the E. coli O157 contamination is not specific to Suffolk, but is part of a larger national food supply concern.
Although all of the cases involve E. coli O157:H7, the cases are not all connected to each other. Genetic fingerprinting has determined that at least 2 of the cases are connected to E. coli cases in California and Minnesota and at least 1 case is connected to an E. coli case in Michigan.
There have been a number of recent outbreaks linked to ground beef, including the following:
- A multi-state E. coli outbreak linked to a ground beef recall issued by United Food Group LLC involving over 5 million pounds of ground beef sickened at least 13 people in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming and Montana.
- An E. coli outbreak linked to a multi-state ground beef recall issued by Davis Creek Meat and Seafood involving about 129,000 thousand pounds of ground beef sickened at least 2 people in Michigan.
- An E. coli outbreak linked to a multi-state recall issued by PM Beef Holdings involving about 117,500 pound of beef trim used for ground beef sickened at least 7 people in Minnesota.
