Sepsis is sometimes referred to as blood poisoning. It is a potentially-fatal condition in which your immune system's reaction to an infection in the blood can lead to multiple-organ failure. Listeria sepsis happens when Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) infects the blood and causes sepsis. About 30% of people who develop Listeria sepsis die. Those who have survived usually got treatment before the sepsis became severe or developed into septic shock.
Signs and symptoms of Listeria sepsis can include fever, night sweats, chills, lethargy, mental confusion, diarrhea, a fast heart rate (tachycardia) and fast breathing (hyperventilation). The person suffering from Listeria sepsis will look very sick. It is important to get medical attention as soon as possible.
Listeria can also cause Listeria meningitis.
If you or a family member has or had Listeria sepsis, you should contact our law firm if it was caused by Listeria-contaminated food. You may have a claim for money damages against a food manufacturer, restaurant, or other party.
Common food sources of Listeria are deli meats, hot dogs, kid’s refrigerated meals, smoked salmon and soft cheese. But Listeria has been found in frozen waffles, alfalfa sprouts, potato products, and a variety of other food products.
