Symptoms
IMPORTANT LISTERIA SYMPTOMS AND RECALL NEWS: Thousands of pounds of meat products, including HoneyBaked ham and turkey, Maverick Ranch hot dogs, Trader Joe's chicken salad, Coborn’s, Cash Wise, Midwest Pride, and deli-packed potato salad, and Louis Rich/Oscar Mayer (Kraft) chicken, have been recalled due to possible Listeria contamination. We have been contacted by people who were diagnosed with listeriosis (Listeria infection) after eating some of these products. If you have any leftovers, DO NOT THROW THEM AWAY. If you get a Listeria infection (listeriosis), we will help you get the leftovers tested. Keep them sealed in a plastic container in the refrigerator, label them "Do not eat" and write our toll-free number on the container. For more information and a free consultation, call toll-free at 1-888-377-8900.
Recognize Listeria Symptoms
Recognizing Listeria symptoms may be difficult because a wide range of symptoms can be associated with the illness. The most common early manifestations of the illness are flu-like symptoms, including fever and muscle aches. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea may accompany the flu-like symptoms, or may occur on their own. The symptoms of Listeria poisoning (listeriosis) include:
- Flu-like fever and muscle aches
- Upset stomach or diarrhea
- Stiff neck, headache, loss of balance, confusion or convulsions
- Flu-like symptoms in pregnant women
If you suspect that you or a family member has Listeria, you should see your doctor. Listeria is a serious foodborne illness that causes an estimated 500 deaths annually
The average length of time between coming into contact with Listeria and the onset of symptoms is three weeks. If you or a member of your family in an at-risk group (young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with depressed immune systems) is experiencing Listeria symptoms you may want to consult a physician. Because listeriosis can be treated with antibiotics, it is important to recognize an infection at an early stage.
Listeria Symptoms and Meningitis
If a Listeria infection spreads to the nervous system it may result in meningitis. A person with an infection may experience a stiff neck, headache, vertigo, confusion or convulsions. Meningitis is a life-threatening illness, and medical attention should be sought immediately. Learn more about Listeria meningitis, also called listerial meningitis.
Listeria in Pregnant Women
Even if a pregnant woman infected with Listeria only experiences mild flu-like systems, the infection can result in serious complications for the pregnancy. Complications from a Listeria infection may result in premature delivery, stillbirth, miscarriage, or infection of the newborn. Learn more about Listeria and pregnancy.
