ListeriaPregnant women are about 20 times more likely than other healthy adults to contract a Listeria infection (listeriosis). In fact, about one-third of all Listeria cases happen during pregnancy. Usually, a healthy mother will not get very sick (see Listeriosis Pregnancy and Listeriosis Symptoms), but Listeria can be transmitted to the unborn baby through the placenta. This often leads to:

  • Premature birth
  • Miscarriage
  • Stillbirth
  • Serious health problems or death for the newborn

Listeria is a foodborne pathogen. Although the CDC-confirmed cases of Listeria infection (listeriosis) is only about 2,500 per year, pregnant women should still be careful to avoid foods that present a greater risk of contracting listeriosis.

Listeria Recalls and Pregnancy
Occasionally, the FDA or the USDA-FSIS recall a food product due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. If you have eaten a recalled product and do not have any symptoms, most experts believe you don’t need any tests or treatment, even if you are pregnant. However, you should inform your physician or healthcare provider if:

  1. You are pregnant;
  2. You have eaten a product recalled due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes; and
  3. You experience flu-like Listeria symptoms within 2 months and/or you have a miscarriage, stillbirth or premature birth.

If you are pregnant and want to be informed about Listeria-related food recalls, see our list of recalls on this website or our food poisoning blog.
