Listeria Information: Select Websites
Food poisoning causes an estimated 76 million cases of human illness in the United States each year. Five thousand people die and more than 325,000 people are hospitalized annually as a result of food poisoning. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that each year there are 2500 incidents of Listeriosis, an illness resulting from infection with the Listeria bacteria, and 500 Listeriosis deaths.
Pritzker | Ruohonen, a nationally-recognized law firm for its legal excellence in complex personal injury lawsuits, including foodborne illness lawsuits, recommends the following websites in addition to this site's Listeria information:
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have a Listeria information page (also includes a Spanish-language version).
- US Food & Drug Administration hosts a chapter on Listeria in their online Bad Bug Book.
- Kids World Food Safe Program has a kids' version of the USDA's Bad Bug Book. It also has an online food safety coloring book and a food safety quiz.
- MEDLINEplus has an extensive Listeria infections section.
- Ask a Food Safety Expert from Iowa State University Extension answers questions about food safety. There is a large body of answers to commonly asked questions about food safety, including answers to questions about Listeria like, "How does Listeria get into food?" and "What can all consumers do to prevent Listeriosis and keep their food safe?"
- Iowa State University Extension's Food Safety Project has a page on Listeria monocytogenes.
