Food poisoning causes an estimated 76 million cases of human illness in the United States each year. Five thousand people die and more than 325,000 people are hospitalized annually as a result of food poisoning. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that each year there are 2500 incidents of Listeriosis, an illness resulting from infection with the Listeria bacteria, and 500 Listeriosis deaths.
