Listeria Recall: Krisp-Pak Fresh-Cut Fruit

Below is the FDA news release regarding the recall of Krisp-Pak brand fresh fruit due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a life-threatening, foodborne pathogen. This is the second recall of Krisp-Pak fruit this month due to the risk of Listeria contamination. Read about the first Krisp-Pak fresh-cut fruit recall on November 1, 2006.

The incubation period for Listeria can be as long as 70 days. This means that you may not get sick from a food product that was contaminated with Listeria bacteria for two months. If you have eaten the recalled Krisp-Pak fresh fruit, you should watch for Listeria symptoms, including fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, headache, loss of balance and confusion.

FDA Recall Announcement: Krisp-Pak Company, Inc. Voluntarily Recalls Fresh-Cut Fruit Because of Possible Health Risk
November 27, 2006 -- Krisp-Pak Company, Inc. of Norfolk, Virginia, is voluntarily recalling all lots of Krisp-Pak Brand packaged fresh-cut fruit with expiration dates on or before 11/30/06, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The recalled fresh-cut fruit comes in plastic containers in 4 ounce cups, 8 ounce cups, 1 pound cups, 3 pound tubs, 10" trays (2.5 pounds) and 13" trays (4.5 pounds) for retail suppliers. The products being voluntarily recalled include individually packaged fruit which may contain cantaloupe, honeydew, red grapes, pineapple, watermelon or strawberries. The voluntary recall is limited to these products only.

The voluntarily recalled fresh-cut fruit was distributed in the Hampton Roads and Richmond, Virginia, areas through retail stores.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The voluntary recall is the result of a sample by the FDA which revealed that one container of the finished product contained Listeria monocytogenes. Krisp-Pak has ceased the production and distribution of the product as Krisp-Pak continues their investigation as to what caused the problem.
