Listeria (Listeriosis) Diagnosis

ListeriaA diagnosis of listeriosis means Listeria monocytogenes has infected the patient's blood, cerebrospinal fluid or another normally-sterile site (such as the placenta or fetus). Flu-like symptoms of fever and muscle aches as well as persistent upset stomach, diarrhea, stiff neck, confusion or headache may prompt physicians to test for Listeria infection.

Pregnant Woman ListeriaPregnant women have a much greater risk of contracting Listeria infections (listeriosis) and should always be tested when Listeria symptoms present themselves. A recent study out of Berkeley has found that the reason for the increased risk is that when Listeria monocytogenes bacteria infect the placenta, the bacteria is protected from the woman's immune system. It was previously thought that the cause was hormonal changes affecting the woman's immune system during pregnancy, making her more susceptible to listeriosis. Listeriosis
A Listeria infection during pregnancy may result in listeriosis miscarriage, listeriosis stillbirth, or the baby being born with listeriosis.

Listeria Treatment

Listeriosis can be treated with antibiotics. If treatment is given at an early stage, infected individuals can fully recover. Members of high-risk groups--especially pregnant women--may require hospitalization. People with advanced and serious cases of the illness usually also require hospitalization.

Compensation for Listeria Victims

Victims of Listeria outbreaks may have a claim against a restaurant, distributor, food manufacturer and others for the following:

  • Medical expenses
  • Lost income
  • Pain and suffering (includes physical pain, disfigurement, disability and emotional distress)
  • Cost of care
  • Other damages

If the victim dies, his or her family may have a claim for the following:

  • Loss of income
  • Loss of care and comfort
  • Funeral expenses
  • Medical expenses
  • other damages
