What is Kidney Failure (Renal Failure)?
Kidney failure (also referred to as renal failure) is the medical condition in which the kidneys fail to function properly. Healthy kidneys clean your blood by removing excess fluid, minerals and wastes. They also make hormones that keep your bones strong and your blood healthy. But if the kidneys are damaged, they don't work properly. Harmful wastes can build up in your body. Your blood pressure may rise. Your body may retain excess fluid and not make enough red blood cells.
Traumatic renal failure (i.e. kidney failure from a car accident) is particularly dangerous, since it is resistant to therapy and contributes to the development of post-traumatic multiple organ failure.
Symptoms of Kidney Failure (Renal Failure, Kidney Damage
- Severe flank pain
- Blood in urine
- Swelling, fluid retention
- Seizures
- Nausea or vomiting, may last for days after the car accident with kidney damage
- Shock
Tests to Determine Kidney Failure (Renal Failure, Kidney Damage) after a Car Accident
There are many tests that may be performed to help diagnose kidney failure (renal failure) after a car accident. A kidney x-ray, abdominal CT scan, or abdominal MRI would be used to show damage to the kidney. A physician may order a renal scan to check the kidney for blood flow. To get a total picture of the functioning capabilities of your kidneys, you may be given an intravenous pyelogram (IVP).
It is vital to determine the extent of your injuries after a car accident with kidney failure (renal failure), so that you can be fully compensated for your losses. The sooner you contact us., the better able we will be to preserve evidence, gather essential witnesses, and address other important factors.
