Honda Accord Recall Due to Possible SPS/Airbag Failure

January 17, 2007 – NHTSA has announced a Honda Accord recall involving 81,000 model year 2004 and 2005 vehicles that may have a defective driver’s-side airbag.

The driver’s seat position sensor (SPS) is supposed to detect the driver’s seating position and adjust the airbag inflation accordingly. On some Honda Accord vehicles, the wiring harness for the SPS was attached to the seat frame in the wrong location and may have been over-tightened. The sensor wire may break and cause the airbag warning light to be illuminated, and the SPS to fail.

If the recalled Honda Accord is in a car accident, the defective airbag system will default to full-inflation pressure, regardless of the seat position. This will increase the risk of injury for small drivers in a frontal crash.

When a vehicle has a SPS, small drivers rely on them. An airbag with full-inflation pressure can seriously injure or kill a small person. Honda should be held responsible for any injuries resulting from the defective airbag system. If you have been injured or a family member has been injured or killed, contact a lawyer at PritzkerOlsen, P.A. regarding a possible lawsuit against Honda, insurance companies and others. Please call toll-free at 1-888-377-8900 or submit the firm's online consultation form for review by a lawyer. For information on car accidents, please see "Minnesota car Accident Lawyer."
