Hepatitis A: Senor Baja in Pomona, California
Three people who ate at Senor Baja in Pomona, California, have been diagnosed with acute hepatitis A. The restaurant is located at 320 E. Foothill Boulevard. Los Angeles County health officials are investigating the outbreak hoping to find the source of the outbreak and prevent more illness. People who ate at Senor Baja in August and develop symptoms of hepatitis A before Oct. 1—including jaundice, fever, light colored stools or dark urine—should contact their doctor.
Hepatitis A is caused by hepatitis A virus (HAV), which is transmitted by the fecal-oral route. For people exposed to hepatitis A, an immune globulin shot can be administered to greatly reduce the risk of getting the disease. However, the shot must be given within 14 days of exposure to be effective. The average incubation period for hepatitis A is 28 days (range: 15–50 days).
