Hemorrhagic Colitis
Hemorrhagic colitis can occur randomly, but is seen most frequently in children and the elderly. It is defined as an acute disease characterized by overtly bloody diarrhea that is caused by infection with E. coli 0157:H7. Outbreaks can stem from eating or coming into contact with contaminated produce, raw or undercooked beef (especially ground beef), or by drinking unpasteurized milk, juice, or cider. The illness usually lasts about a week.

Symptoms of Hemorrhagic Colitis

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Severe abdominal cramps
  • Watery, then visibly bloody diarrhea
  • Fever (seldom)

Prevention of Hemorrhagic Colitis
Escherichia coli O157:H7, the bacterium that leads to hemorrhagic colitis, is more likely to contaminate fresh produce through vehicles such as raw or improperly composted manure, irrigation water containing untreated sewage, or contaminated wash water. Treatment of produce with chlorinated water reduces populations of pathogenic and other microorganisms on fresh produce but cannot eliminate them. Reduction of risk for human illness associated with raw produce can be better achieved through controlling points of potential contamination in the field; during harvesting; during processing or distribution; or in retail markets, food-service facilities, or the home. It is vital to maintain good sanitary habits in the bathroom and the kitchen.

Hemorrhagic Colitis-E. coli Treatment
Treatment is mostly supportive and includes extra fluids, to prevent dehydration, and a bland diet. Antibiotics are not recommended because they can lead to complications, including hemolytic uremic syndrome.
