What is Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (Jaw Bone Death)?
Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a disease resulting from the temporary or permanent loss of blood supply to the jaw bones. Without blood, the jaw bone tissue dies, and ultimately the jaw bones may collapse.  This is sometimes referred to as "jaw death."

The symptoms of osteonocrosis of the jaw (jaw death) include the following:

  • pain
  • soft-tissue swelling and infection
  • loosening of teeth
  • exposed bone
  • numbness, heaviness and abnormal sensations of the jaw
  • Brands of oral bisphosphonates include the following:
  • Actonel ®, manufactured by Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals
  • Boniva ®, manufactured by Roche Laboratories
  • Fosamax ®, manufactured by Merck & Co.
  • Fosamax ® Plus D, manufactured by Merck & Co.
  • Skelid ®, manufactured by Sanofi Pharmaceuticals
  • Didronel ®, manufactured by Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals
