What is Anaphylaxis?
Anaphylaxis is a rare but potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. Anaphylactic reactions are most commonly related to drug or food allergies or insect stings/bites, according to the National Institutes of Health. The immune systems of people with food or drug allergies treat everyday foods or certain medicines like foreign substances. The tissues in their body release substances called mediators, such as histamines and leukotrienes. The release of these substances causes muscle contractions, which can produce sudden and severe symptoms that may include:
- Abdominal pain
- Swelling of throat, lips, tongue, around eyes
- Difficulty breathing and swallowing
- Wheezing, coughing
- Heart palpitations
- Skin redness, hives, itchiness
- Nasal congestion
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Fainting, dizziness
- Anxiety
- Drop in blood pressure and paleness
- Loss of consciousness, collapse
The most serious complications include: airway blockage, respiratory arrest (no breathing), cardiac arrest and anaphylactic shock.
Anaphylaxis Lawsuit: Compensation for Victims and Families
An anaphylaxis lawsuit cannot be filed unless there is evidence that the anaphylaxis was caused by a defective product or negligence. This means that there must be evidence that someone, usually a company, is responsible under the law for the anaphylaxis. If this can be proved, the responsible party must compensate the anaphylaxis survivor or the family of someone who died.
Anaphylaxis survivors may be able to recover money for the following:
- Medical expenses
- Lost income
- Pain and suffering
- Emotional distress
- Other damages
Families of people who died from anaphylaxis may have claims for compensation under state wrongful death laws.
